About Dr Richard Baer
Dr Richard Baer is a Brisbane based Kidney Specialist and General Physician. After completing a pharmacy degree, Richard studied medicine at University of Queensland and graduated in 2000 with honours. In 2009, he completed his training in Nephrology and was admitted as a Fellow of The Royal Australasian College of Physicians. Since then, Richard has completed his second specialty training in General Medicine, and a Master’s degree in Public Health and Tropical Medicine at James Cook University graduating with distinction.
During his career, Richard has worked throughout Brisbane and Queensland, with many years spent in Far North Queensland. He provides patient care in general nephrology conditions including all stages of Chronic Kidney Disease, hypertension, diabetic nephropathy and other nephropathies, dialysis and transplantation as well as general medical issues. Richard is also one of a few Nephrologists trained in Interventional Nephrology and is proficient at dialysis access procedures including insertion of peritoneal dialysis catheters, haemodialysis catheters, fistulograms, fistuloplasty and fistula stents. He also has a special interest in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health and for many years attended an outreach clinic in Far North Queensland.
Richard remains actively involved in physician trainee and student education. He works collaboratively with Kidney Health Australia to provide education sessions across Queensland to a variety of forums. He welcomes the opportunity to provide in-house GP education sessions. Dr Baer has been an invited speaker and presenter at a number of national and international conferences. Dr Baer’s work has also been published by Australian and international journals in Nephrology research covering broad areas of clinical care and Interventional Nephrology.
Awards and Recognition
In recognition to his commitment to quality health care provision, education and clinical trials, he received the 2016 Heartfelt Service Award Logan Hospital, 2014 Award in Recognition of support and contribution to Intern Education and Training from Cairns Hospital, 2010 Australia and New Zealand Society of Interventional Nephrology Award, 2008 Australian and New Zealand Society of Nephrology Amgen Rural Award.
Dr Richard Baer is also a member of the Australian and New Zealand Society of Nephrology, and a member and former chair of the Australian and New Zealand Special interest group in Interventional Nephrology. He is a former Director of Physician Education at Logan Hospital and previously served as the Co-Chair for the Statewide Renal Clinical Network for Queensland Health.
